Center Point Ambassadors

On July 9, the Center Point Area Chamber of Commerce held a cook out at our Farmer’s Market to raise money for our scholarship fund.  Chamber Ambassadors, Michael Stover, Terrell Vallery, DeVanny Byrd and Chris Pilot assisted Chamber employees, Tim Gann and Mary Skelton in cooking and serving hamburgers and hotdogs.  This was in addition to our usual fare of popcorn, lemonade, snow cones and candy.  The Chamber hosts a booth each Thursday from 1-5 at the Farmer’s Market in the City Hall Parking lot.  The cook out was such a success that we will be offering the same service on Thursday, July 16.  So come on down for one stop shopping for fresh fruits and vegetables, Alabama honey, and freshly grilled hamburgers and hotdogs.

The 2009 Scholarship recipients were acknowledged at our May luncheon.  On hand to congratulate the winners was our speaker Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale.  Erwin High School winners were:  David Elliott, Frederica Everette and John Morton.  From Pinson Valley High School, Casey Foster received one of the $550 scholarships.  Each of these exceptional young men and women were awarded these scholarships based on their community service in the City of Center Point.  We wish them well in furthering their education and in all future endeavors.

After many years of effort and hard work by a large group of people, the Center Point Senior Citizen’s Center is finally open for business.  A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on May 1 to commemorate the event.  Mayor Tom Henderson and Center Director Tiffany Wade were on hand to welcome the many guests in attendance.  David Lamb served as the master of ceremonies.  Also in attendance were State Representatives Owen Drake and Arthur Payne.  From the County Commission were Bettye Fine Collins and William Bell.  City Council members Roger Barlow, Linda Kennemur, Raymond Olan, Terry Leesburg and Danny King joined Mayor Henderson in welcoming the community to this event.  Representatives from Congressman Spencer Bachus  and the Jefferson County Community Development office  were there as well.

Activities at the Senior Center begin on Monday, May 4.  Lunch will be provided, but the numbers are limited and will be served on a first-come, first-served basis.  Many thanks to all of the people that made this Senior Center a reality.

The Youth Division of the Miss Center Point Pageant was held on Saturday, April 4 at 4 pm at Center Point Elementary School. The winners were (left to right): Junior Miss Center Point - Shelby Gerhardt, Young Miss Center Point - Hannah Huffstutler, Little Miss Center Point - Jai Morgan Smith, Miss Hoover 2009 who served as Mistress of Ceremonies - Liz Cochran, Tiny Miss Center Point - Taylor Smith & Petite Miss Center Point - Tannah Kirkland.

The 7th Annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast was held on Friday, March 13 at Hilldale Baptist Church.  John Croyle of the Big Oak Ranch, the featured speaker was introduced by Center Point Mayor Tom Henderson.  Nearly 150 guests were on hand to listen to Mr. Croyle’s inspirational talk.  Miss Alabama, Amanda Tapley and Miss Northeast Jefferson County, Coleen Burns provided the musical entertainment.  The Chamber would like to thank Ron Pate and Marie Harbison of Hilldale Baptist Church for providing both the site for the breakfast as well as the assistance of their wonderful staff.
